Random group generator

Paste a list of names, choose how many groups you want or how large each group should be, and get a random split instantly. Unlike a plain shuffle, this tool remembers earlier splits and avoids putting the same people together over and over.

How the groups are built

Enter names — one per line — and decide whether you set the number of groups or the maximum size of a single group. Groups come out as even as possible: when the names do not divide exactly, no two groups differ by more than one member. Every draw produces a new split, so you can run several variations on the same list.

Avoiding repeated pairings

Tick “Avoid earlier pairings” and the tool takes previous splits into account. Every repeated pair earns a penalty, and the algorithm searches through dozens of attempts for the split with the fewest repeats. Signed in, the history is stored on your account and follows you across devices; without an account it stays in this browser. You can review and clear the history at any time.

Balancing by an extra attribute

Add an extra value next to each name — a level, a language, a role or any other marker — and groups can be balanced by it, so people with a similar background do not all end up together. Signed in, you can pull names from a saved class list instead of pasting them again. Groups can be given custom names so the result is readable straight off the screen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a class into random groups?

Paste the names into the text box (one per line), choose either the number of groups or the maximum group size, and press “Create groups”. The result can be shown on screen or drawn again.

Are the groups equal in size?

Yes. When the number of names does not divide evenly, the remainder is spread out — no two groups ever differ by more than one member.

How do I stop the same people from always ending up together?

Turn on “Avoid earlier pairings”. The tool compares each new split against previous ones and prefers the arrangement with the fewest repeated pairs.

Can groups be balanced by level or another attribute?

Yes. Add an attribute field after each name and enable extra data — the split is then balanced so that people sharing an attribute are spread evenly across groups.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

The tool is free and works without an account. An account adds saved name lists and a group history that follows you across devices.
